“Femme Noir” (Part 1) is a reaction to how our culture represents women, both in my own experiences and especially in the media. As an artist I have always been interested in how women have been, and still are, presented in our society; often as victims, something to behold, to covet, to control, to be seen, not heard, nothing less or more then beautiful objects. This work cannibalizes ideas found in popular media/culture and refocuses them to address feminist issues and concerns. The end result of this project (Part 1) is a 2D collage (rather then the photographic approach in Femme Noir Part 2) which I hope can open the conversation about how women are represented and to help support and empower us all.
This project helped to inform and create Femme Noir Part 2.
